REDEVELOPMENT OF EASTGATE SHOPPING CENTRE IN BASILDON GETS GO-AHEAD
26th April 2021The project includes the partial repurposing of the shopping centre and the delivery of a comprehensive mixed-use district for the town centre. The proposal sees the demolition of the former Debenhams department store and the relocation of Asda to a new appropriately scaled modern store.
Graeme Jones, from Development Manager Sovereign Centros, commented:
“We welcome Basildon Borough Council’s approval of our proposals for the Eastgate Quarter.
“Now more than ever it is crucial to bring forward our vision for the site, enhancing the Eastgate Centre and the surrounding area through the introduction of new and exciting uses. These proposals are placemaking and will ensure that this environment continues to be the heartbeat of the town centre for the community, creating a vibrant mixed-use destination for the people of Basildon.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the local community as we bring further, detailed stages of this proposal forward.”
The plans, designed by Leslie Jones Architects, cover a 25-acre site and comprise almost 2,800 units of mixed housing built across a number of buildings with retail and leisure uses at ground level.
Eastgate Quarter is one of the largest schemes of its kind and will be developed over several phases.
